Other AbstractFemtosecond laser can be used for space-selective microscopic modification to transparent materials. and then results in additional optical functions due to its strong electric field. which is sufficient for inducing nonlinear optical effects in materials. Moreover, the photoinduced reactions are expected to occur only near the focused part of the laser beam due to nonlinear optical processes. The characteristics ofthe femtosecond laser and recent research on defect manipulation, valence state manipulation of active ions (rare earth, transition metaland heavy metalions),precipitation and control of micro-crystal and changes in refractive index induced by the femtosecond laser, and applications in fabrication of optical switch, micrograting for WDM, active optical waveguides, photonic crystals and other micro-optical deticaldevices for integrated optics were introduced in this review.
