AbstractA new structure of interleaver filter based on analog birefringent units is presented. The birefringence of analog birefringent unit arises from the difference of refractive index of the two medium blocks with equal thickness inside it and can be much larger than that of a conventional birefringent plate. The general expression of the spectral transmittance of the filter is derived. The conditions to producing flattening spectral transmittance are analyzed. The center-frequency tunability of the filter is also investigated. This can be achieved conveniently by rotating the analog birefringent units slightly. We can easily obtain the passband and stopband with wide flatness width (greater than 1/5 period) and high isolation (-30 dB for 50 GHz interleaver filter) and accomplish the center-frequency tunability simultaneously. The influence of temperature on the properties of the filter is investigated. An experiment to verify the feasibility of the analog birefringent structure is carried out as well.
